Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day in the United States is held annually on the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring and appreciating mothers, motherhood, mother figures, including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers, and the influence of mothers in society, such as a teacher.

 

Many people give gifts such as cards, flowers, candy, a meal in a restaurant, a trip to the spa, and other special treats. Yayyy!!! But I remember that when my children were in grade school, I received an array of precious gifts every year made with love by small hands that I still hold dear to my heat all these years later: A glittery card with, “I Love You, Mom”, a fingerprint poem, a necklace made of dry macaroni noodles, a hand print on a small paper plate, flowers cut out of colorful construction paper and colored with crayons, and other delights that their teachers helped them make. So to you, Dear Teachers, Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Those Mother’s Day writing activities we remember so fondly are those where our kids created something special for us, wrote the words themselves, and signed their name. It was the beginning of communicating by writing. It is very important for our children to communicate their feelings to us. And it is very important for us to communicate our feelings to them. How can that be accomplished? How about writing a book for them?

Writing for children is a great passion of mine. I started writing books for my children when they were very young, and I just kept writing while they were growing up. Today, I write books for thousands of children, but I still put little things in the books I ghost write so my kids know it’s me. For instance, when they were younger, I sometimes got lost while driving. So I’d tell my kids that we were on an adventure. Here’s an excerpt from one of my books to demonstrate:

“How far am I supposed to go on this road, and which way do I turn?”

      “Aren’t you using the navigation system like Dad showed you before he left to go fishing?” Mike asked anxiously. “Mom are we lost?”

She smiled at him in the rearview mirror. “Of course not dear. We’re on an adventure!”

Uh, oh.  Joe, Mike and Alicia knew whenever she said that, it always meant the same thing. “We’re lost!” they said in unison.

You can write books for your children as well.  It doesn’t matter if it becomes a published book or not. Some of the fondest memories I have of my mother are of the stories she used to make up for us. I still remember them today, and I am absolutely certain that those magical moments my mother created for us are what inspired me to write for my own children, and become a children’s book author.

I also think I like to write for kids because I never quite got over being one, myself. I like that.

Beyond writing simply for kids, many adults enjoy the books I write too. As we grow older, and gain more experience in life, we forget what it was like to be a kid and the enthusiasm that we embraced life with. We forget about all of own marvelous adventures that helped to shape us while becoming adults.

We forget that reading is just as magical as an adult as it is as a kid. We forget to use our imaginations to soar to new accomplishments, or achievements that help us make the world a better place.

For these reasons along with others, I recommend that you take some time and escape to a different world with your children. A world more innocent, where caring and sharing makes everything alright. I urge you to read my books along with your children, and share their experiences with them as they travel along a road where anything is possible if only you can imagine it. It is those paths that will shape your child’s mind to believe that they too can accomplish anything they set out to do in life.

It is the sharing of these thoughts that maintains strong and loving family bonds, and not only brings you closer to your kids, but will also keep you closer as they mature. While many kids back away from their parents or authority figures in life, the closeness and communications you share with your child today will help them through all the difficult times, and allow them to share with you all of their desires or achievements along with their disappointments.

Believe it or not, reading kids mystery books can help to take away many of life’s mysteries for both you and your children, because, “Reading is Magic!”
